A plain round table in solid wood, with nothing on it that can crack, chip or shatter. If there are kids running around the sofa all day, this is the kind of coffee table that can take it.

Description

Glass tables look nice in photos, but in a house with small children, every time a toy or a steel glass hits a glass top, everyone looks up. With this table that worry goes away. There is no glass and no sharp corner, the edge goes all the way round, so a kid running past the sofa is not going to hit a pointed corner with their head.

Now, the top. It is about 4 cm of solid wood, which is thick for a coffee table, and you can feel it. Knock on it and it sounds solid, not hollow like the cheap boards. Wood will still take a scratch or a small dent if someone bangs something hard on it, it is wood after all, but a small mark on wood is much less to worry about than a crack in glass.

The size is about 90 cm across and about 40 cm high. 90 cm is a good round, 4 people sitting around it can each keep a cup, a plate and a phone and still not fight for space. 40 cm is a normal low height in front of a sofa.

Under the top there is a cross base with 4 legs going out at an angle. From the sofa you hardly see the base, the top is what shows, so the table looks like a big round tray sitting low on the floor.

So there are 2 finishes, and they look very different. Meteor Dark Walnut is the dark brown one, deep colour with darker lines running through it, and on a light rug like jute or beige it really shows. Pale Oak is the light one, a soft yellowish wood colour with the grain showing clearly, and it suits a room with white walls and light furniture. Either way, the grain on your table will not be the same as the photo, every piece of wood is different and no 2 tables come out the same.

The table comes in 2 parts, the top and the base. You put the base on the upside down top, turn 4 bolts with the spanner that is in the box, and turn it over. No carpenter needed, but get one more person to help flip it, because with 4 cm of solid wood the top is heavy.

Before choosing the finish, look at your floor. Dark walnut on a dark wooden floor can disappear into it, and pale oak on a light floor can look washed out. Pick the one that is the opposite of your floor or rug, like in the 2 photos, where the oak sits on a dark floor and the walnut sits on a light rug.
